Day Three

Today Three Groups presented their games. In all cases the entire class participated. We were fortunate to have fine weather and were able to play our games outdoors. Images show the groups planning their game, giving instructions, and then the class playing the game.

Group One: “The Human Roulette”

The group chose to take the classic Roulette gambling game and scale it to human size, replacing all elements with human activity. Borrowing elements from “Musical Chairs” the game consists of two circles of players moving in opposite directions to music. Each player in the outside circle receives either a red or a black card. The two players on the inside each chose a color to represent. When the music stops, the two players check to see what color they landed on. The one who has chosen the correct color “wins” and continues to play. The player who loses must change places with the person in the larger circle in front of whom they have landed. If they both win they both continue. Then the music begins again. Photos: planning, instructing, creating two circles, a winner revealed.

Group Two: “The Domino Game”

This game is based on the traditional Domino Trains game in which the object of the game is for the player to play all the dominos from her/his hand. Rather then numbers six body parts are used: head, elbow, palm, hip, knee and foot. Players are divided into two teams and each is given a two-sided cards on which two body parts (one for each side of the body) are identified. A coin is tossed for the first player and taking turns each team must add to the first “human domino.” If the second team does not have a part the first team gets to play another domino. The team which uses all of its player first wins. Photos: planning, instructing, first “joins”, final domino string.

Group Three: “The Werewolf of Wroclaw”

Based on the game Werewolves of Millers Hollow. The game takes place in a small village which is haunted by werewolves. Each player is secretly assigned a role – Werewolf, Ordinary Townsfolk, or special character such as the Witch, The Fortune Teller and so on. There is a Narrator who controls the flow of the game. The game alternates between night and day phases. At night, the Werewolves secretly choose a Villager to kill. During the day, the Villager who was killed is revealed and is out of the game. The remaining Villagers (normal and special villagers alike) then deliberate and vote on a player they suspect is a Werewolf, helped (or hindered) by the clues the special characters add to the general deliberation. The chosen player reveals his/her role and is out of the game.  The group changed a number of rules such as providing the village leader with two votes, assigning two werewolves, and increasing the circle of play by having players wander about aimlessly (sleepwalking) with their eyes closed. Photos: planning, instructing, one dead villager, the wolf revealed.
